The Hero’s Journey: Crossing Frontiers in Learning Communities

In this talk, we’ll view our work in learning communities through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. We’ll consider how the Hero’s Journey exemplifies the meaning of crossing frontiers—for our students as learners and for ourselves as learning community practitioners-–and how it might offer a more aspirational take on how we think about community. As we explore the ways that the Hero’s Journey is reflected in our work, we’ll also highlight a few practical approaches and strategies to address some of the challenges that this archetypal journey presents.
